Strange Cyanobacteria.
I was doing maintenance on my tank today and I found a strage patch covering my sandbed. Originally I thought it was cyanobacteria, dark green in color. However when I stirred it up, intending on siphoning it out, it came up like a large solid mass. It had the consistancy of felt, with particles of sand and rock embedded in it. It didn't break apart like I'm used to seeing Cyano do. Is this just an especially thick mat of Cyano or is this some other algae I've not seen in 5 years in the hobby?

Can you post a picture of it? From your description I would agree that it is probably some type of cyano

It's still cyano just a different strain. It's easy to remove though and doesn't return as quickly.

I would think just extra thick. I get that sometimes if I haven't noticed for a while with both the red and the green.

I use Chemclean. I now have a new slime, clear or white just like snot. Grows on the glass long and stringy breaks up and gets trapped in the power heads, socks overflows, it is a royal PITA, 5 gallons of bleach so far.

The "snot" as you called it sounds like Dinoflagellates. I pulled it all out manually, it was quite easy.. and it hasn't come back.
