Ammonia and "new" saltwater

I have heard that many test kits will show trace amounts of ammonia in newly mixed saltwater. Is this true, and if so how long will it test positive?

It happens sometimes. Ammonia can be a contaminant in the manufacturing process of some of the salts that go into synthetic salt mix.

How long it will remain depends on a lot of things. If you put it into your tank, then the bacteria in the tank will make short work of the ammonia.

Yep, what disc said. It's usually trace amounts. I've never personally found any, but it has been written about.
