Whats wrong with my fish

I got a royal gramma about three weeks ago. From the beginning he swam sort of slanted on his side, it is not one particular side. He sometimes appears to be covered in white spots, I thought it was ich but it comes and goes so rapidly I doubt it could be this. The other fish in the tank seems fine. Yesterday after eating, he went and laid on a rock, I thought he was dying but by morning he is very active and healthy looking for food again. Any insight would be appreciated.

Water parameters
temp: 79
salinity:1.025
ph: 8.1
ammonia: 0
nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
calcium: 400
Alk: 8

I have one also and it sometimes swims upside down going into and coming from it's cave. I do not however have the white spots coming and going. I'm sure someone will chime in here and let you know exactly what is going on.

If its an occassional white spot it could be a grain of sand. My fish get them from time to time and I start to worry they are getting ich but it usually is gone by the next day. Post a picture it will help others help you.

Did you QT your fish? It doesn't guarantee you wont get ich in the tank but it certainly reduces the chances greatly. It also allows you to monitor the fish and its behavior without other in-tank distractions.

It is not an occasional white spot, he literally seems to be covered in them. For example, I saw him a couple of hours ago and he looked fine, now when I see him he is covered in spots again. I will try to get a pic when he comes out again. I would be certain it was ich by the look of it except that is seems to come and go very quickly.

If it is ich, has anyone used ich attack on reef tanks. It says it is safe and I have had a lot of success with it in freshwater.

After reading these forums for a month, I have learned something very important about ich treatment. No medication for ich is reef safe! Read this: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=1985626
