Water polishing

Just looking to see what people are doing to keep their tanks crystal clear. Keeping the particles out, discoloration, etc. Any advice?

Everything I have read is basically filter sock and Carbon (not GFO, sorry).

I have heard that UV does help with water clarity to some degree. Not sure about ozone. Not sure about the sock as I do not run one, I'd imagine the smallest you can get if you're going for clarity.

Carbon (change it every few weeks), filter sock (changed every few days), regular water changes, and some people say UV (I've never tried).

Ozone is the top of the top water clarifier (as far as crystal clear goes). It makes your tank look like there is no water in it. But most people do not have it, because ozone is dangerous because the smallest smallest smallest crack or leak anywhere can potentially kill you. Only large show tanks have ozone these days.

Most people I know say that a UV sterilizer helps water clarity and best of all, it's safe.

All of a sudden "filter socks" have replaced a good mechanical filter, it's the same thing people & you get surface agitation from an HOB filter + they do a better job of particle removal from the water column. Clean it just like you would a filter sock, no more or no less work.

Yeah, the UV's get overlooked alot. The benefits are soooo worth the price of running one. I will never go without a sterilizer again. I spent a lot of time reading up recently and added one a couple weeks ago. The difference in water clarity is incredible. It is just worth taking time to finding a quality UV that is sized properly with the correct flow through it.

May I ask what kind of UV sterilizer you have?

Other than water changes, I don't really use anything. A happy healthy reef tank should have particles floating around in it IMO. I've tried running carbon along with a filter sock in the past, but things just didn't seem to look as good as when I just let everything run wild.

I have a 25 watt inline Aqua Sterilizer. I run it split from my return line (Mag 5) with a flow meter and ball valve. It is set at 125 gallons per hour, but rated to 255gph for 90000 sec/cm2. Slower the better. Works great and the results were obvious within 3 days of setting up.
