the sand can be as deep as you want. what the fuge will hold. 2-3" is fine by me. i like Caribsea seafloor special grade sand. 1-2mm

you could also have no sand , just rock and chaeto. or even more sand , like 6"

i like no sand, just rock and chaeto. you want a 6500k light over the fuge to grow the chaeto. a simple clip on fixture will do.

i keep a chaeto ball in mine with 2 small pieces of live rock in the corner to provide a home for pods (no sand). 1 turbo snail and a tiny hermit crab to keep it tidy. i have a small daylight power compact light running on a reverse cycle from my DT. in other words it runs at night while my other lights are out.

its basically a preference thing.. research and figure out what you would like to put in yours. people like to keep it bare to keep it clean as detritus build up will elevate nitrates.. others like the DSB to help grow pods and process nitrates but then you run into problems with it trapping detritus... if you are running plenty of rock in your DT and a DSB then i would recommend a chaeto ball only. as far as lighting you can buy a refugium specific light from aquacave or something, or look on ebay for a cheaper option. i have heard of people having success with a clip on light from home depot and a grow bulb which will run you about $15... hope that helps.

good luck!
