Exclamation HELP! heater trouble

I started hearing a clunking sound from my tank a few days ago and investigated over 2 days. Come to find out that it happens whenever my heater turns on. this is different and not normal but what does this mean? I def want to get a replacement. the current one came with the tank in a 55 gal kit. I am trying to avoid spending a lot but I want to get something of good quality. my question is, has this happened to someone before with their heater clunking? and any suggestions on a new heater? I plan on getting the heater tomorrow morning before i leave for class but the only problem is i am limited to petco and pet goods because they are closer than the LFS i always go to. thank you in advance for any advice.

I will say this, sometimes when it is quiet I can hear a "click" when the heater turns on, however a clunk is quite different. You live in New York, it's still warm, I would save up & buy an Ebo Jager heater, they are above & beyond most heaters on the market, also in the future, a seperate temperature controller like a Ronco is a very good investment to give you extra protection against heater malfunctions. Heater is like $28 & controller is $75.

The clunking is probably thermo switch going back and forth. I work on refrigeration systems here that sound when therms are starting to burn out. I would buy a temp for now and save up for the jag.

if a jag heater is 28 bucks then thats much cheaper than what i saw at petco. petco has aqueon heaters for my size tank going for like 38 bucks and pet goods has fluval heaters going for like 40 something dollars. is it worth buying a temp for these prices? i just really dont want anything happening with my heater while im not home. i commute all the way to NYC everyday for school and my parents really dont want anything to do with my tank besides feed them and sit on my bed and stare at it. do you think it will be ok to buy a cheaper heater thats rated for a smaller size tank than a 55 as a temporary fix while i wait for the jag to be shipped? i can order the jag tonight if i can do that.

I wouldn't panic, you probably could go a month or two without a heater this time of the year, you might even be able to get a 150 watt Ebo Jager for less, google it, amazon it, try marinedepot.com, take your time & get a good deal.

ok so i guess i will do some research and put an order in. i just dont want to risk anything with my fish...just picked up a pair of snowflake clowns a little while ago so they are the highlight of my tank. id be devastated if something went wrong. so recommendations on wattage would be 150? would it hurt to go bigger?

No, it would not hurt to go bigger, some people like to split the difference between two heaters, less chance both will malfunction, but if you went 200-250 watt, it would be fine.
