quarantine tanks! Help please!

So my 7" louti grouper has some sort of fungus on him so I bought one of those complete 20 gallon set ups filled it with water and filled the filter with ceramic biomedia from my main tank FX5. After hooking myself twice and failing to set the hook twice while trying to get the grouper out I resorted to a massive net and I finally got him. Anyway he’s been in the quarantine tank for about 5 hours and the ammonia level is about .10. What do you guys do to keep water quality in your quarantine tanks perfect??

Thanks in advance.

I leave a filter pad for a HOB filter in my sump to collect bacteria then when I'm ready to QT something I use the pad in the QT filter with fresh saltwater and I only feed every 3 days.

but you have a big fish in a little qt.... you may need to do water changes every other day to every day if you are having ammonia problems... depending on the meds you use you can also use an ammonia remover to help

If there is any ammonia/nitrite present I use PRIME in addition to frequent water changes.

Use a chemical ammonia remover: Prime, Amquel, etc---and get an ammonia badge (Sea Chem) to indicate when you have a problem. Change your filter media obssessively.

He didnt make it... I guess the stress from being caught and then stuck in the small quarantine tank was to much. He was my favorite fish.. So what else do i need for a succesfull quarentine tank? I dont want this to happen again.

i am sorry about your loss, but a healthy fish does not die from the stress of being caught and stuck in a small quarantine tank, even though a bigger QT (55g or 75g) should've been used to house a 7" fish. something else must've killed him. my biggest suspicion is depletion of oxygen in such a small tank. did you have an airstone or powerhead agitating the water surface? large fish like yours require lots of oxygen, and in a small 20 gallon tank without much water movement and surface agitation they can use up all the oxygen in a few hours.

yea i agree with the oxygen theory. i had turned the air stone off because i didnt think it was nessesary then i went back down to check on him and he was breathing heavily so i turned it back on and within a few minutes he started gulping at the surface and looked extremely distressed so i removed him and dabbed malichite green on the areas affected by fungus and put him back in the display tank and when i got back from class about 3 hours later he was dead.
