Information about Koralia EVO
I've been researching on Koralia evolution 4.
First I researched on the Hydor site and on the FAQ I saw that the Koralia Evolution can be used on Wave Makers. Researching here on Reefcentral I saw a lot of people complaining about this pump when used on Wave Makers. So I decided to write an email to hydor and ask about it. They answered that the koralia evolution can't be used on Wave Maker and just the Koralia 12v can be used in their Wave Maker. Now I'm fully confused..... At premium aquatics if you see the description of the pump they say its compatible with Wave Makers. About the koralia 12V, can it be used with normal Wave makers or just with koralia wave makers? does it come with a DC adaptor? Thanks for your attention, Fábio. |

The Koralia Evo series can not be used with Hydor's own wavemaker unit. That unit will only control the 12V Koralias, which have special plugs.
However, if you want to cycle the Koralia Evo on and off to simulate a wave cycle, they are advertised to do that. Many folks are using their aquarium controllers to initiate the on/off cycle of varying time lengths to make random currents and waves. I believe the complaints you're seeing about the Evos being used with wavemakers stem from the fact that *some* of the units seem to have the nasty habit of starting in reverse, and continuing to run in reverse. That is supposedly fixed by getting new bushings or a new front piece, but that has yet to solve the problem on mine. |

I think the confusion is how people mean different things when they say "wavemaker"...I think the real definition of "wavemaker" is a device and pumps that varies the speed at which the pump goes, like 10%, 50% 100%, whatever, and that creates a true back and forth motion, a "wave". Only certain pumps (the tunzes and koralia 12v) have that ability to throttle up and then throttle down...thats why they cost so much...
THe other use of "wavemaker" is for devices that only turn on the pump and then turn if off. 100% or 0%. The evos can not be ramped up and then ramped down, they are either on or off, no speed control. Soooo, devices like the redsea wavemaker do not ramp up and ramp down, do not vary the speed of the pump, only vary the amount of time the pump is full on or completely off. The Koralia wavemaker varies the speed of the pump, really making waves, and therefore can only use a pump that has the same ability. I hope this is clear and accurate... |

Ok, now I understood!
Koralias evo can work with wame makers like timers that turn on and off the pump. My wave maker doesn't variate the flow. It handle 4 pumps and it turns one on and the other 3 stays in a low rotation. Then it turns on another one and so on. The user guide says it has soft start. The evolution 4 will work in my wave maker? |

I kind of did a do it yourself with my Koralias. I just used some cheap timers and have them alternate every fifteen min.(lowest interval on the cheap timers). It creates a nice ebb and flow. I haven't had trouble with start up yet, but it hasn't been going long.

Basically, the only "wavemaker" that will work with the Evo is one that accepts a standard AC power plug from the pump, and turns the outlet either on or off... no variable voltage at the outlet. |

Koralia Evos are junk
Although the Evos will work with an on/off timer or controller they are made extremely poorly. The front "stopper" that is built into the grill will bust out the entire front of your pump resulting in the impellor spinning backward. I have contacted Koralia for a few months trying to get parts and they just don't respond. 3 other friends have the same issue...so it must be a known fault with these pumps.
Don't waste your money. Koralia is garbage... get 2 Ecotech Mp10s instead and save yourself the headache. Plus they take up less space in your tank. |

Someone emailed me Koralia phone number and I called them. Customer Service rep was cool. Said sending replacement parts. Front grills were modified and beefed up so less likely to break. He also confirmed that they are wavemaker compatible.
