Need Advice for Ultraviolet Sterilizer Addition.

So I am contemplating setting up a UV Sterilizer on my aquarium but I have concerns. I have a Bio Pellet Reactor and a Fluidized Sand Filter. So my question is do I really need it? Won't the UV kill all the beneficial bacteria as well?

Well, what it will NOT do is prevent ich or other parasites. Great water clarifier though.

Hmmm so I guess it will also not affect the beneficial bacteria then.

Actually it all depends on the exposure time. Different organisms tolerate different doses of UV. Bacteria if I recall are not the most resilient ones. Icy is much larger than a bacteria and relatively resilient, so requires much more water to UV time. There are tables for different UV lamps of power v.s. time v.s. flow to maximize the kill ratio of specific organism. You just need to know what you want dead.

Spacey :-D

This is my experience only with uv and ick. I had a powder blue and hippo tang covered in ick and on their last few days. In desperation I bought a 54 watt and 40 watt uv sterilizer from aqua ultraviolet. I put them both on my return line and within two weeks both fish no longer had visible ick on them and to this day are clear of ice even after removing the uv.

I am not saying it kills all ick but it will greatly reduce the ick population preventing it from multiplying unchecked and giving the fish a better chance at fighting it off.

I only wanted to relay my experience with uv and ick. I have tried many reef tank ich medicines and none worked for me.

I apologize for any spelling errors but this iPad spell fixer is incredibly annoying.

I did not notice the uv affecting my bacteria population.
