Floaty thermometers are great but you have to buy them at the store and grab the one that is in the middle of the range.

Like shifty I use a ranco temp controller. I also have a digital aquatics reefkeeper2 and a floaty thermometer.

The ranco is an industrial controller that have a great track record.

I used a Coralife digital thermometer before I set up my Apex with a temperature probe. The precision of the Coralife makes you think its accurate, but it was about 2 degrees low.

I had a couple cheap floaters. I took a bowl of crushed ice and filled it with water. Stuck all of the thermometers in it and used the one that was at 32.

I use a lifeguard temp thermometer and I verify it with a digital temp probe that I bought at target.

FWIW my cheap Coralife digital is within two tenths of a certified thermometer from my lab at work, luck I guess...
