I've lost some livestock!
Hi,
I'm still very new to this, so I have some questions. I had two peppermint shrimp in my BC29 for the last 10 weeks. I saw them daily and they seemed to get along with everyone fine. We have since lost one. I have no idea where it is or what could've happened to it. What eats peppermint shrimp? Also, we got a new Yasha goby and pistol shrimp pair last week. They seemed to get along right away. We were super excited. But, we have yet to see the goby since the first day, and haven't seen it come out to eat. Is that normal? We thought the pair had made a burrow under a rock, but when we picked up the rock, we only found the pistol shrimp. Both shrimp and goby were pretty small. Are we looking for carcasses or are my livestock just hiding? Any ideas? Also, we had a small bloom of hair algae recently. What eats that? It's going away, but super slowly, and not at all on the sand, just the rocks. Could use some help with that. Also, did a death cause the algae growth? BC29- 24 lbs live rock, 2 in. sand bed, stock lighting and filtration. 2 black clowns, 2 chromis (yes, we are going to give back the chromis this week), Yasha goby (?), Randall's pistol shrimp, 2 peppermint shrimp, 1 cleaner shrimp, 12 assorted snails, 3 red legged hermit crabs and 1 blue legged hermit. Thanks for your thoughts, Jessica |

How are your water parameters (especially ph, ammonia, nitrates, and salinity)?
I do not anything on your list that I would say is a guaranteed shrimp killer, so I would suspect water parameters. As far as your goby, he very well could still be in your tank but again suspect your water parameters first. Also, gobies can jump. Do you have your tank covered? I would stop searching for him though...you will stress him out if he is still in your tank along with all of your other residents. The goby may very well be in a hole in your rock...in a burrow in the ground...hopefully with time he will come out. However, he may just be a 'hidey' fish that you see rarely. |

Yes make sure your water parameters are in good shape. I had a shrimp I thought I lost turned out he was molting and hiding out showed up a few days later.

One day I had a bullseye pistol shrimp and a Randell's Shrimp Goby and a couple of peppermint shrimp. After a while I lost my Goby and then all I had was a pistol shrimp. Needless to say I traded that Pistol Shrimp back into the LFS that I got it from....That is the end of this story and that rogue Pistol Shimp.

Gobies are tile surfers... I have had two jump out of a tank on me. And one of them jumped out of a covered tank that had barely enough room to stick my ring finger in the air gap between the cover and HOB filter. precision jumpers. he was nearly to big to get out the air gap, but he made it out.
