Where to get Pickling Lime?!?! (Aiptasia Issue)
Alright so I have an Aiptasia problem from some LR that I recently got. I've since moved it all to my QT to stop it from spreading. Today I went to my Walmart, Jewel, Target, and Ultra Foods..... no luck. Either I'm completely blind or they don't have it (tried finding the 'canning section' as well as looking in 'spices')
Anyone in the Wheaton-ish area recently find some? Trying not to haveta go all the way to a LFS to get Joe's Juice, etc. Also going to look into getting a peppermint shrimp to fend off any others that pop up. Any advise/help? Last edited by DB9181; 10/15/2011 at 08:16 PM. |

Alright, checked online - looks like I have like 5-6 within a 10mile radius of me. I'll start calling them tomorrow to see who's got it to save the frustration of driving everywhere.

I just did this search yesterday.. All the grocery stores seem to have every other "flavor" or pickling .. (bread and butter, jalepeno's... all kind of crap) but not what I needed. WalMart had it though.. I'm not local to you, but I wanted to give you this one tip, it was with the canning jars, not the spices...

Take the pickling lime powder and mix it with alittle water to create a paste and Get a syringe applicator (take the need off). If you can take the rock out of you're tank and put it in a bowl/bucket that is best because sometimes in a last surivial attempt it can release it's spores into the water column causing it to spread. If you are doing it in you're take, temportarly turn off all powerheads/filters/etc. Take the "paste" and inject it in/onto the mouth Of aiptasia - it will retreat into it's hole. Cover the hole/area with additional paste. You can then turn the pumps back on/return the rock to the tank. The paste should not effect you're tank levels much since it's such a small amount. However, pickling lime is pure calcium hydroxide which can raise you're PH levels in larger amounts. If you have a large outbreak, it's best to treat afew per day. You can also suck up any additional "paste" the following day.

I get a wide-guage needle (between 10 and 14 work ok, the lower the number the better) and leave it on. This helps because the aiptasia will immediately retract into the rock as the syringe gets near it. Push the needle in and squeeze the paste through. Need to clean after or else the needle gets gunked up pretty badly. It helps to heat the paste to near boiling as well before pulling it into the syringe.
