What kind of jellyfish is this?
Does anyone know? Are these venomous? i got it from a friend.. |

no idea. some jellys are venomous some not, i have no idea but i would think if i was to put a jelly in my tank it would be a dedicated tank and not a reef either just my 2 cents.

Yes it's sometimes referred to as the blue jellyfish or blue bubbler jellyfish. The blue coloration actually comes from a special type of algae which the jellyfish harvest and use for photosynthesis. Depending on the region where the jellyfish is collected, it can also appear completely brown for the same reason. Like many jellyfish, the Catostylus mosaicus carries a mild venomous toxins for killing small fish but there has been no record of any serious injury (just itchy rash) to people. In fact, the Catostylus mosaicus is offered as food in certain part of the world (mostly in Asia).

Jellyfish have needs much different than any other saltwater fish or invertebrate. They need very minimal flow and I believe they are usually kept in special round tanks because of the way they swim.
