Stocking help!
Dear Reef Central Members,
My tank is currently set up and I am awaiting 90lbs live rock to be deliverd tomorrow! So I thought I should get together a stocking list as I will be adding fish in a couple of weeks! All of these fish our my favorites, so I was wondering if they would be happy in my 55 gallon "to be" reef tank. I want to keep lps later on and maybe a few clams here and there. I also want to keep 1 or 2 scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp as well. So here's my list: 2 ocellaris clownfish (pair) 1 bicolor blenny 1 diamond watchman gobie 1 Mcoskers Flasser wrasse (added second to last) 1 firefish (or a pair if space permits) 1 Red mandarin (added last, or around 6 months) Inverts lps softcorals clams scarelet skunk cleaner shrimp(s) And of course a clean up crew with snails and scarelet reef hermits. What do you think, comments, thoughts and suggestions. Sincerely, Alex Last edited by hedgehog1; 11/01/2011 at 09:37 PM. |

I think that list sounds good and maxes out your 55g. Good choices in fish. I would wait several weeks after getting the rock to add the fish. then add a max of 2 fish every month or so.

Your tank is going to be too small for a mandarin unless you have a refugium. With that I am still not sure if your tank is big enough for it. I would make this post in the "intended purchase thread"
Also you are going to need to make a lid for you tank as you have a few jumpers in the list. |

The only iffy fish on your list for tank is the mandarin; all of the other fish you have listed are good choices. However, it is possible to keep a mandarin in a tank your size but you will need to have a sizable refugium. We kept a mandarin at a healthy weight in a 57g rimless for several months, but the sump has a large refugium chamber (we had to move the mandarin because he jumped out twice). That mandarin is now in a 65 gallon aquarium with a large chamber in the sump acting as a refugium again. This tank has a glass lid, so good luck jumping buddy!!!
With your choices, like rogermccray said, you will need a lid. Good luck! |
