What to put in fuge?

My sump has skimmer, pump, and refugium chambers. I'm wondering what I should have in the fuge?

My heaters are in there, and can't really be moved due to space constraints.

What else should I add? Live rock? Sand? Any critters or parts of my clean-up-crew?

How large of an area are you talking?

My fuge typically contains a DSB and chaeto...I've got a new one I'm adding to a system I'll be planning that is for a mangrove garden and DSB.

Well unless you put some kind of Macro algae & some pods, it really isn't a refugium. a few pieces of rubble, some sand if you want, a hermit & snail or two wouldn't hurt, but the idea behind having a refugium is to have a place for beneficial pods to reproduce in abundance & nutrient export through a non invasive Macro algae.

It's roughly a 12"x12"x12" section of my 30 gallon tank that I'm using for a sump.

I may be able to squeeze the heaters into the skimmer chamber, but not 100% sure. I guess that'll be my driving factor here.

You can also place the heater into the overflow compartment to save space.

I have LR and chaeto macroalgae in my refugium, and fine sand in a tupperware container (so that I can move it out easily when I do sump cleaning).

Putting it in the overflow is a fantastic idea that I never would've thought of, thanks!

It's internal, and you'd see it from the main display. I built it out of grey glass but it's still pretty see-through. But, you also can see the 3 drains I built (went with a bean overflow system) so there is already a visual there that is less than ideal, so I don't think putting the heaters there would be a major issue. Maybe I can find some piece of dark plastic or mesh or something to put in the overflow to block the view of the heaters and drains and solve all my issues.

Smile refugium?

I have a deep sand bed ,live rock, macro algae and pods galore! Do not add any clean up crew because you don't want them to compete with the pods and macro, plus anything that comes in on the liverock will grow. I now have baby or dwarf nassarius snails in my display! i also trade in my macro algae for a coral frag or 2 at my Local Fish Store....

I used to have DSB, chaeto and live rocks in my fuge but recently removed the sand because of low flow causing detritus build up.
