I just put it in a tub and run a lot of water though it till it is clear. Then I lay it out on a tarp and let it dry out.

If you want to maintain it as live sand, get several buckets of used tank water, put a little in a bucket and stir it, then drain the water off for re-use (in washing more) and dump the drained sand into a waterless bucket/ Keep at this until you have cleaned out what you can. Then install it, put a flat garbage bag over it and just let the plastic bag float as you add new salt water. This keeps crud from kicking up. There will be some kickup anyway, and then will settle over a number of days as your system undergoes a mini-cycle. Keep all livestock in qt until the tank is running well. No sense stressing them.
