Changing ligth

Hello everybody.

My tank have 166 gals and i'm currently using 2 HQI 250w coralvue 14000k + 2 x T5 54w Aqua Medic ocean blue. It's a mix tank with sps, lps and some zoos. Since the lamps are about one year old i'm thinking in replacing them. However another option is also change the lighting system with a LED system. What LED system do you recomend for this tank??

thanx

Ecotech Radions or Ecoxotic Panorama PRO fixtures.

although i haven't personally seen them in action, it seems like the radion led fixture has it going on. if you wanted a cheaper led setup, that is still quality, i'd recommend the ai sol.

Depends on your dimensions. The new Panorama fixture will come in 18 and 24" from what I have seen. I've also seen rumors that there will be larger fixtures as well.

I'm currently using 500w of hqi with 14.000 k and more 108 w of T5. How much power should I install and with what fixtures if I decide to change to a LED system?

It isn't that simple. Sounds like you have a 48" tank so you would need 2 Radions or 2 of the 24" Panorama fixtures.

My tank have 59.06'' x 27.56 '' . So if I want to change to a LED system, for example to a panorama system i should choose 2 x 23.4 ''? I still have many doubts, like for example how many time will the LEDs work without need for replacement?

One a big aspec of your question is the $$$$ you want to invest on a led fixture. how much are you talking? there are a lot of options out there than will be good choises, but will all came to how much are you willing to spend. lets are rated for 50000hrs depend on the led type than you lamp has

Well I don't want to spend much more than $1500- 2000... But by my calculations I can pay it in 3 years by the savings in the electric bill... and if this is true I can pay a little more... but no more than $2500....

Well... I have no idea but... if it would be a modular isn't it better for future upgrades?

Yes. That is where I really like the Ecoxotic stuff. Their new fixtures are totally modular so future upgrades are a breeze.

I'm been looking also the DIY options but I'm still a bit confused. I searched the forum for "DIY" posts but I could'nt find one that explained to me how a LED systems works, what are the need electronic pieces to put the systems to work. Can you post any link to a good site to explain this kind of light system?

here is a link to a store
and they have kits allready set up with everithing you need to build a led lamp, also
http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-...its/Categories

Also here are the instructions of 1 of there kits so you can look at the complex and the partsyou need to set up a lamp

http://www.vinnymarini.com/pictures/...%20Oveview.pdf

But if stetic matters and you do not have a cannopy I would go for a brand lamp

My best chose would be on this order

-Aquaillumination
-Ecotech

I rteally love the -Vertex Illumina but is not modular.

Hi all!

After some research I'm thinking in this DIY fixture:

3 x (12 x Leds pro-light of 5W white with 10000K) - 150 cm
3 x (12 x Leds pro-light of 5W royal blue with 445nm-460nm) - 150 cm

every led have a 45º lens.

What do you think??
