Additives and supplements?

I thought I was ready and had all the equipmen I needed to start my tank. Than I read about calcium and magnesium, etc. How do I know when I need to add that? And is it required to add chemicals in the tank or can it be done naturally?

When first starting out you reaaly don't need any supplements. Water changes will take care of replenishing the elements for you. Once you begin keeping corals, you'll want to test for magnesium, calcium and alkilinity.

What about this paragraph I found?

"Live Rock also needs special additives that contain minerals and nutrients. These additives also help to enhance the beautiful colors in the live rocks. With the proper conditions and nutrients your live rocks will begin to grow and become covered with many living organisms, such as coraline algae and sponges that naturally live in coral reefs. It's lots of fun to grow live rock.
