PVC bottom tank

Does any one here have a PVC bottom tank? If so... Do you like it? Pros/Cons?

Thank you Bruce

Just did a search and read up on these pvc bottom tanks. Seems like a cool concept. Probably saves on material cost and definitely weight.

a local store here sells alot of these.... after hauling alot of tanks i can say without a doubt that pvc bottom tanks weight ALOT less.

also something i found that if you order the pvc bottom tanks the cost of changing drain and return sizes is easy and not as exspensive as changing the sizes in a traditional glass bottom tank...

I thought AGE was the only company that offered tanks with a PVC bottom.

I have an AGE tank. I love the tank. I cant really say there are any cons the pvc bottom. they are lighter, and the pvc allows for easy drilling if you wanted to do a closed loop or something else. You also do not need to put a sheet of styrofoam under them like you do flat bottom glass tanks.

In terms of sturdiness do you think they are better? I live in an area where earthquakes are relatively common so if the pvc bottom tank is less fragile, it's something for me to consider.

jucario are you also going to use a Euro Brace tank I also live in a earthquake zone and watching the water sloshing over the sides is not fun.

moondoggy now that you mention it you made me think about it; I like how the rimless tanks posted here look and I was considering going that way, but I guess you are totally right.

I just ordered a new 120-gal from Planet Aquariums here in Dallas and pretty much all of their tanks come with PVC bottoms now. I just toured their facility today and I didn't see any tanks with glass bottoms. They will be making me a glass sump with PVC bottom as well, so it seems that this is a new trend. I haven't read about any negatives and I see these more and more on custom tanks nowadays.

Not sure that they have a website. The builders are formerly Oceanic builders and one was with Deep Sea Aquatics for a bit. If you are interested in obtaining a quote for a tank or sump, PM me and I will put you in contact with a guy that can order you a tank. Great pricing that is guaranteed to be lower than any other custom builder out there.

I'll post up pic's once I get my tank and sump. Should be around 2 weeks or so.

"You also do not need to put a sheet of styrofoam under them like you do flat bottom glass tanks." Why do people need to do this? Do alot of people do this? Please explain!

I think it has to do with making sure the surface the tank sits on is completely level. The foam will allow the tank to sink a little bit, and self level.... negating any slight inconsistencies in the material the tank is sitting in.

I have a rimless 100 Gallon cube myself (standard glass bottom). I was told by the tank manufacturer to absolutely put 1/4"-1/2" Foam under the tank.

There is no need to put styrofoam under a glass tank if things are done properly.

Same company that did my tank (ordered from different store) and I am extremely satisfied. This is the company that I believe GvineReefer is referencing and who my tank came from. I believe the owner's name is Dan and was reachable by phone to answer any questions I had. I'd definitely recommend them.

No, that is not the same company that built my tank. Planet Aquariums is a different company than Oceanview Aquariums. Yes, one of the Planet Aquariums guys used to build for Oceanic, but has now branched off on his own and is running Planet Aquariums. If anyone wants a quote on a new tank, please PM and I'll give you contact info on the dealer that will give you the best price, guaranteed. I am very satisfied with my tank and the price I paid, which was well below any quotes I received from other builders.

the purpose of foam under a glass tank without trim is to alleviate any pressure points. Foam board will not magically level a tank if the stand is not level.

think of it like this, say you have a perfectly flat piece of glass on a flat surface. If it is perfectly plane, then there are no pressure points. suppose you then put a pebble, screw head, or seam of some sort under that glass, you create a very high pressure point in that exact spot that will crack the glass.

Foam simply soaks up imperfections in the wooded stand. glass is usually perfectly flat, wood is not.
