Canister filter

I want to set up a 125 gallon fowlr tank. Do you think I can do ok with a canister filter such as the largest Rena xp4 filter w a hang on the back skimmer? I plan to have a sand substrate and use ro water. Thanks

A canister filter would not be the approach I would take. However, many have successfully set up saltwater systems using them. Another example of something I wouldn’t do would be an under-gravel filter. But again, some have successfully had these kinds of systems running for 30+ years.

I would prefer a sump/refugium where you could set up the skimmer as well as other things, like heaters, and get them out of the DT.

It will work just fine. As for a skimmer... look at the reef octopus lx2000s. With plenty of LR and a good skimmer you may only need the canister for chemical filtration. Just a side note, when I was on a FW forum (08-09) alot of folks were having problems with the xp4. If it were me I would use the xp3 instead. You may want to incorporate some powerheads into the system too.

yeah it will work fine, fish can be very messy and as your system is a fish only you will need a good filtration system to remove the waste quickly, just make sure you keep it clean as they clog quickly under load.
