I was going to but in the end decided to just go BB. As of right now I am glad I did.

If you have your fuge in the sump- I would not. I have a issue with keeping sand around expensive pumps- it only takes a few grains to score a impeller, and the benefit is not worth the risk to me. Anywhere but the sump and its a matter of taste whether you do or not.

I prefer the refugium to be BB as well. Helps with maintenance, and preventing some detritus build-up. If you really want sand in the 'fuge, I'd put it into a tupperware container so that it's easily removable when you need to clean it.

I will be having a DSB in my fuge. I was creative in my sump design to hopefully keep sand from getting into the pumps. I put an 8" baffle towards the front of my sump just big enough from my protien skimmers pump to fit in. Essentially my sump is a large fuge and a return section. There is the 4" space from the beginning to allow me to stuff my protien skimmer pump in the fuge section. My GFO/Carbon reactor's pump is a maxi jet, which I can simply suction cup to the side or silicone a piece of eggcrate above the sand bed to keep sand out.
