quieting down water coming in to overflow...

just powered up my system. (not my first by any means) however this one's over flow is very loud...not the siphon but the water coming in to the overflow box from the return pipe. there is a cut out-no bulk head unlike my last big tank so the return is lower in the tank it's + visually but H2O flowsin that spot morre and is loud.

my thoughts are:
sponge around the cut out to reduce flow.
raise the drain pipe up and 1" or 2 (it's falling about 3-4"

anything else you guys can thing of?

i'll post pics tomorrow and may be a video...

You could raise the water pipe or put a tee on it should raise it up about the same.

yeah that was my first thought too.
this is what I am working with:

the water coming over the over flow is silent but the water coming throught the cut out for the return pipe is load as...well you get the idea...

I had the same issue with mine and I just raised the stand pipe by a couple of inches, you could still here a small trickle, but it is not a splashing waterfall. I have heard some people putting small bio-balls or even enkomat.

also @ the 90 that's where the siphon break hole is too. if I cover the tank side with my finger it gets quieter...so maybe a sponge there might help slow down the water coming in but not stop the siphon break when needed??

the siphon hole should be on the top to let the air out ..as you have it you can only siphon with about 1/4 of the tube because air is trapped in the u pn the top...like having a big air bubble in you siphon box u/..cut flow because the water is only taking up half or less of the diamiter...

put a good ball valve home depot and lowes ones suck...they are really sticky and you cant fine tune them...i got this one at ace it is ok..but better yet a gate valve ..if you can find one....and adjust so it is completly under water but not using the emergency exit..

i am just getting mine set up ..i need doors ..and ...
to make the emergency drain a little shorter it was arguing a little so i went to other stuff..i font like ridgid pluming but in some places you kinda have to..you can break your tank ...prying on a long piece of pvc through a bulkhead..so i allways try and put some flexable where i can ..

oops yeah I was playing with the u tube in the pic....so I raised the pipe by two inches.
I think it may be to high now...
BUT THE BIG NOISE with both 13" and 15" pipe is coming from the anti siphon hole in the 45 angle return line. it splashes kinda like peeing....

also there is bubbling sound in the sump from water going in to the filter sock. that's not to bad but if there is any tips to help with that too i am all hears.

Have you tried putting an angle in the flexable return hose that goes into the "sock" (if you have a sock). I have the identical system, and mine is not where near that loud. What size tank and what return pump?

I think the 15" is a bit high. not much if and surface skimming going on...
should the anti siphon hole just below the water line? right now it's about even and that what is making most of the noise.
