MP40,s idea placement

Ok, here is what I am continplating.
I have a 72 x 30 x 30 tank. I have 4 mp40's. I want to run them along the back of the tank, along the bottom. The tank will be BB and the live rock will be placed on a shelf, 4 or so inches above the bottom. and extend about 24 inches out from the back.
If I sycn the pumps, do you think I could get a front to back surge going. Rather than a side to side surge. Also I think this will cause a nice up welling as well.
The idea behind this, is to hide the powerheads and to creat a reef shelf. with the power heads being far enough back so as not to be visable.

Let me know what you think. Good, bad, terrible, or my god what is he thinking LOL
Thanks

I have mine on the sides of the tank, so I don't know for certain, but the one thing I can see happening is you won't end up with enough flow up top(I am assuming SPS tank since you are putting the MP's low and that will create a lot of flow for LPS that would be on the bottom). Most of your flow will be near the bottom on a relatively tall tank(30").

If you can add a bunch of micro bubbles and watch the bubbles circulate in the tank and adjust the powerheads if needed

The flow with the vortechs placed on the bottom of the tank will be fine, as long as there are no rocks placed in front of them. The water will flow along the bottom, be forced along the front panel of the aquarium, across the top 1/2 of the tank towards the back pane, and then down back to the intake of the Vortech. With a 30 inch wide tank, you should be able to get a wave going, but it will be a "quick" wave. The resonance frequency increases, as the length between panels with the vortechs on them decrease.

You will have play around with the frequency, and all the slave pumps will have to be set to sync. It will be much easier if you have the controllers capable of auto-tune.

It will take some experimenting but just try them in different places. Remember the under tow is very strong on a vortech so going down low might not be all that necessary.

Either way you probably won't have to work too hard at it as 4 mp40s in your tank are going to rock it regardless of where you put them
