Sock Filter and Filter Feeder Foods
Stupid question. When I feed corals like phytoplankton doesn't it get stuck in the filter socks? Or is it so small and goes through them?

I always turn my filtration off when feeding just to stop the food getting sucked right out. I do leave the powerheads on to broadcast the minute food though.

How long do you keep the filtration off?

Think that would depend on the filter sock. Different ones have different mesh size, I think it usually says what size particles they trap... unless your cheap like me and make your own out of felt
Most zooplankton would probably be trapped in the sock, but phyto is pretty small. If the filter sock doesn't get it the protein simmer will. |

Like scarface70706, I turn off my sump pump and leave my CL run (no filtration). I'll leave it off for and hour. 30 minutes before lights go off and 30 minutes with the light off. And I only run filter socks about 5 days and then pull them for 2. So I'll feed smaller food on those days as well.

Turning off the return pump works great, that way you're not feeding the sump when it all blows into the overflow. I think time it's off would depend on how much you're feeding, what you're feeding and how much life is being fed. Obviously a tank with 2-3 fish and a couple corals probably wouldn't need the pump off for an long period of time (nor would it take as much food), whereas a tank with a large coral population, CUC, and lots of fish would take more food and probably longer without the return.
