SO CONFUSED T5,, HALIDE QUESTION :headwally:
55 gallon aqaurium 40 gallon sump 40 gallon refugium.. all testing is perfect always is.. add alot of lime to keep ph and alk up rather new tank but have been in hobbie a long time.. so here goes.
used to run 2 96 watt pcs and 2 175 halides.. nevr had a problem.. this year started the tank back up was told 4 54 watt t5s would have same output... having a hard time believing it.. but question is.. some of the high light acros are doing great at the top of the tank.. but i lost a sunset monti and a green and yellow monti are bleaching bad... at first i thought to much light.. now i am thinking maybe not enough or the wrong spectrum.. i went and got one of each spectrum for the t5 and i was going to retrofit them into the halide hood.. so that would be a total of 566 watts over a 55 is that too much and has anyone had a similiar problem... im soo confused and frustrated |

566 watts of T5 over a 55 is A LOT of light. Personally I dont think you need that much at all, with my experience and t5's you could cut that in half and still be able to grow sps just fine especially with a 55 gallon. A lot of people underestimate t5's, but to answer your question i think you will have a lot of bleaching problems and maybe even heat issues with that much light over a 55. what brand and spectrum bulbs are you running now? i dont think its a spectrum problem you are having but if they are bleaching i would say too much light. If you can list water parameters and bulb combo that would be a lot of help as to what else could be your problem.

parameters are perfect always are.. people have been telling me montis are kinda picky about changing light so my guess is that is it.. just doesnt seem real to me.. the t5s are nice and they give off alot of light but before i was running two 96 watt pcs and two 175 watt halides total 542 watts.. the halides only ran a few hours a day..
now i am runing 4 54watt t5 for a total of 216watts over the tank.. and you may be right if 216 watt of t5 light is burning montis in my tank they are crazy pwerfull... but all the other corals are doing well but not growing like they used to.. the bukbs were the ones that came with the base light that i used for a retro fit.. i went out yesterday and bought some good bulbs.. at work cant remmember name so when i get home today i will be able to see if the other corals are open more |
