Im new to this as well, but the smell could be caused by ammonia levels going up . which is good if you are cycling your tank.

lets see what the others say ...

Where did you get the rocks? What sand did you put in?

Wet (live) or dry?

The live sand, will (after sitting around) only have anaerobic heterotrophic bacteria survive, the by product of their activity is hydrogen sulfide, rotten egg odor.

The dry rock could have some organic matter hanging around, and adding water continued the decay process.

+1

This is my bet too. Especially if the dry rock is the 'dead' recently live rock. Less so, if it's the mined (lace/base) rock variety. Either way my bet is the smell is coming from a bacterial bloom. JMTC & GL!

Check out the rock. Is there any seaweed, shells, etc. On it? I bought pukani dry rock. If there is any visible debris, take it off.

Did you wash off and/or scrub the dry rock? If, not I'd recommend that and do a good water change.

Be sure to test for phosphates. As some dry rock is reported to leach them for months.

Good luck!

You can do it either way, it all depends on how much money you want to spend.
