no skimmer tank

Hi All,
Downgrading and simplifying from a 120 reef that unfortunately I have let go to hell to a 40 breeder. The tank will be lightly stocked with no SPS and the center piece will be a couple of Clarkies with a RTA. Also will be a a fairly large Galaxea fascicularis. Very little sand. Thinking of going skimmerless and doing a 20% water change by weekly to make up for it....wadda you think?

Joe

As long as you keep up on the WC regimen, you should be good to go.

NO offense intended but if you were unable to do what it needed to keep up the 120g, will you actually do the water changes and up keep for this tank? just asking the question.

Not a problem at all as long as you do those water changes. I ran my 30 cube skimmerless for a bout a year and a half when my AquaC Rermora bit it, and have been running my 40B skimmerless for about a month now. I have a hang on back fuge with macro in it.

I have a 29 gallon with two occelaris clowns, a cleaner shrimp, 6 blueleg hermits, 4 astrea snails, 4 nassarius snails, a frogspawn, a Duncan, zooanthids, and mushrooms. I run a HOB filter and do a. 20% water change once a week and everybody is fine.

I started my 29 without a skimmer, but had one on it 3 months in. Glad I did it.

My 34 gallon red sea max doesnt have one and i wont put one on. Things are doing great. My 180 i just downsized my skimmer to one that is rated for 150 gallons and eventually i want to be skimmerless on that tank too.

my question is why? running a skimmer gives you an additional layer of protection. do you not want to pay for a skimmer? dont have the room? a skimmer is a set it and forget it simple way to export nutrients. the route you are taking is only going to increase your time and effort.

the answer to your question is obviously YES you can have a healthy tank with no skimmer and regular WCs but you already knew that if youve been in this hobby for 20 years...so why even bother with this thread?
