To Reef Central

Reef keepers don't typically use gravel siphons while cleaning our tanks. We normally use really fine sand for substrate which doesn't require siphoning if you keep sufficient flow in the tank.

If your using anything larger for substrate your possibly looking at future Nitrate, cyano, algea and diatom issues.

I have been using a "gravel vac" for the last 20+ years -- works great when you have a shallow sandbed.

I use "Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand" in all of my tanks, a great sandbed -- don't have any nitrate, cyano, algae nor diatom issues.

This is the one that I use,

I've been using one of these, in the 100 foot model, for years for FW and SW

You could make one with a few plastic fittings, some tubing and a venturi style water-bed pump

1/2" vinyl tubing, about 4' long from a hardware store. Might cost all of $2 .....

You guys dont clean your sand in the front of the display glass every 4-6 weeks? I am new to the hobby. My reef maintainer was cleaning our sand, siphoning it and shaking it out like once a month. The sand was dirty too. I have a Mag 3 in a 75 G tank....is that enough flow?
