How to get salinity up?
So my tank has been setup for a week, I just got the Damsel out of my tank, and I'm gonna cycle a different way, but now my salinity is lower again so it's a good thing I got him out.... It is about 1.021 and I need 1.024. Should I just top it off with saltwater or take some water out and more or less do a water change of 3-5 gallons??
And I was gonna edit my last post and just keep adding questions since it have a lot of beginner questions that would help, but it wasn't letting me edit so I wanna try to do that here. |

If the tank is empty and just cycling I wouldn't worry about the salinity being 1.021, but you can just top off with salt water and bring it up slowly if you want.

Alright thanks. I might just swap some out cause I have 7 gallons of saltwater at my house. Mainly cause I have a coral right now.

Contrary to the above I would cycle the tank at the salinity level I intend to keep the tank or at least close. It’s not a good idea to cycle with corals in the tank but if they came on the rock you don’t have much of a choice.

It's 1.022 and a half now. Would that be an okay level if it never got higher or should I go for 1.024??

1.024-1.026 is the preferred range. Increase salinity slowly over a few day's time.

Two ways to do this, both easy. Add a little bit of saltwater with high salinity each day, or just wait for the water to evaporate until it hits 1.024. |

So will a lid keep it from going up when it evaporates? Because it falls back in and it seems to go down..

A lid will reduce evaporation. But for clarification purposes, salt does not evaporate. All top of water should be fresh water, preferably RO/DI.

I had the same issue when I stared my tank but my salinity was around 1.020 it took me around 10 days to fix it. I guess these things happen when tank is new cuz now salinity is least of the problem.

It's steadily been going up since I posted this. And that's what I've always heard, starts out as a problem, but later on you don't even think about it really.
