Reef Octopus LX1000 HOB skimate???

I have a 90gal. Light bioload. Recently using a cheap Seaclone skimmer. I was getting some tea colored skimate only. I just bought this LX1000 & getting this what looks like coffee grounds. Is this typical? What exactly is this stuff? Could it be the detritus & proteins clumping together?
Thanks
