Diamond goby
My skimmer stopped working yesterday. I found my diamond goby lodged in the skimmer pump in the sump. It managed to get through the overflow, through the piping, into a filter sock and then somehow got into the sump. Is this common, and how can it be prevented in the future?

Did he jump over the overflow wall or can it fit through the teeth? Most likely he jumped, in which case you may need to cover the back of the overflow with an acrylic cover or bird screen cover (consider covering the entire tank with 1/4" bird screen to prevent the fish from carpet surfing).

They are jumpers. I had to add a 1/4" screen on my tank and he jumps into it almost daily.

There is a big gap where the return enters the display tank trough the overflow. I have had many small fish end up in the overflow through that opening.

Whisperer I agree that I think that is what happened...since he's gone I don't need to worry about that now but will do that if I replace him

goby
you can add a strainer like this one on the overflow tube so even if it gets past the overflow comb he can not get down the tube. I use it so snails can't go down the overflow and clog it as well.
