Equipment one floor below?

I'm in the process of setting up a home office reef tank. This is my first tank in 4 years and I'm very, very excited to be setting up another reef. Tank is a 70g "cube". Odd size, 30x30x18. With how odd the size is, I'm afraid the stand will be to small to easily work on my equipment so I'm thinking about drilling holes below the stand I'm going to build and have the equipment in the basement. One big plus side to this is hte basement tends to stay at a constant 68 degrees in the winter and 60 in the summer, and help to keep the water a little cooler.

My biggest concern/question is what size pump would I need to use as a return? Head height should be about 10-12 feet. What would be a good flow rate as well?

I'm in the process of designing the stand, researching skimmers (don't think my CPR will be up to the task of a 70g) and designing a sump.

With the sump in the basement I'll also have better access/ability to build a refugim.

Thanks for any yelp! Been a whiles since I've been on ReefCentral and I was glad to see it was still so active.
