Suggestions on filter for new FOWLR

Starting to get everything ready to setup a 36g bow front fowlr tank, I am just debating between a canister filter, or a HOB filter. A protein skimmer will be added as well, I have been searching and searching and seems everyone is leaning more towards a HOB filter as canisters can be nitrate factories?

I thought of maybe getting a marineland bio wheel HOB filter or an aquaclear 70 hob, along with a protein skimmer, and maybe a powerhead.

The tank will have a few small fish, clean up crew, and of course the live rock. Maybe down the road I would consider adding some better lighting and a few soft corals, but for the as of right now its only going to be a fowlr.

Does this sound like an ok setup with the hob filter and protein skimmer? (can anyone suggest a decent protein skimmer)
