Sand + Powerheads = Problem

So no matter where I place my powerheads, sand is constantly being moved and covering up corals or building up in places. Ideas?

place the power heads high up. that should help and if not try takeing away one and see if you still hsv good flow. Also try them in diffrent spots of the tank

Put half way up and aim up at the surface of the water

Right now one is one one side facing the middle-top of the tank, and the other is facing the middle of the front. And I have tried both facing each other but it created a whirlpool affect in the corners.

How old is the tank?

I've seen it take close to a week for the sand to settle in new tanks or with the addition of a new PH.

How much deeper would the ocean be if it didn't have sponges?

Its not marine but I did put fine aragonite in my lake tang tank, and it took well over a month before the flow stopped disturbing the sand. Or rather it took that long for the bio film to bond it well enough, and for the finer particles to get filtered out.

Tank is a 55. Typical dimensions, nothing but two 1200gph powerheads. Primarily soft/lps corals and two sps corals. No sump, due to lack of space

2 x 1200 in a 55?

No wonder you have sand blowing about, think those are a little on the side of overkill in a tank that size, 2 x 550 or 750 might be more suited.
