can i cycle using LR in the sump?

My main tank has some vermetid snails on the LR and I am setting up another tank. My q is, if i put LR from my original display into the new tank, obviously vermetids will come with it and infest the new tank. What happens if i put the LR into the sump? will the snails be able to travel through the pump and into the display?

Also if the tank has all dead rock in the display and LR in the sump, does it still cycle the same way as if all the rock was in display?

There would still be a cycle, yes. The bacteria would populate everything it p[ossibly could in the tank regardless of where it was. The bacteria is a result of the ammonia etc that is released into the water.

Im sure it is 100% possible for those snails to make it up through the return or drains. If one of your main reasons for starting the new tank is being rid of them, I would go with all new rock.

If you put a 'red knobby star' into your tank apparently they eat them. Never had an issue with them, its what I read can get rid of them. They ARE NOT reef safe so if you have corals you might want to remove them first, or place the LR in your sump and then put the red knobby star inside the sump.

And yes the cycle will sill be the same.

if you dont want your worms to come back up, use a filter sock on your return and make sure its watertight
