flow question

okay, so we downgraded from the 180 to a 55 single corner overflow (48 x 12.5w x 16h). will be filling it up with mostly ricordias, zoas, softies, and a few LPS. going to Foster and Smith monday (I live 5 miles away ) and i need to decide on an option.

should i go with a single vortech MP 40 or a Korlia controllable wavemaker with 2 korlia 4's (rated at 1400 gph ea)?

I like the idea of the MP 40 and all the options it gives me, but it will only be one point source, so will it reach all the way across the tank? will the rockwork be able to support any corals close to the powerhead? will the waterflow be varied enough?

anyone else out there running a single mp 40 in a 55?

with the korilas, I would have 2 points of flow, though it would be a little less flow than the vortech.

any ideas would be welcome

I would go with 3 or 4 smaller controllable powerheads if it were my tank.

With the height and width, why not go 2 MP10's instead. With the 10's you loose less space on the inside for stocking of coral

i've heard that when u turn up the mp 10's, they get noisy. and an mp10 only puts out a max of 1575gph. so if i go with the 4 channel koralia controler, i can add powerheads in the future if needed by just buying pumps and not the whole works

Two maxed out mp10s will give you 60x you tank volume in flow that should be fine for what you want. A guy in my local club runs 2 mp10s on his 75 at only 80%.

I run one mp40 in my 50 gallon cube and it's more then enough flow and I run it at 35% all of my sps, lps and softies are more then happy.

a 50gal cube is only what, 24" across? would be different trying to go across 48"...

If it was my tank I would go with 2 points of flow plus the return. You can get more randomized flow that way rather than just one direction. On my 55g I have my return come in right next to the center brace pointing at the front glass, and a koralia evolution 750 in each corner on the back glass angled slighty to the middle pointing at the front glass.
