Diamond Goby and Wrasse Question

We decided to get a Diamond Goby and it is making our tank really cloudy. When I got the goby, I didn't take into consideration that I have really fine sand and every time it sifts it makes the tank cloudy where the store has a more course sand. So far I have cleaned out the media on our HOB filter everyday for 4 days and its getting old

Seems the LR is loosing its color and my McCosker Flasher Wrasse has this slimy stuff around its face and it seems to be keeping it from be able to swim, it's always at the bottom or resting on the LR.

My questions are....will the cloudiness stop? and is my Wrasse going to be ok?

If not, I may have to take the Goby out and I know I will have to take all the LR out to get it or try to trap it.

Thank you in advance for any feedback

How long have you had the goby? It took about three weeks after we got our goby for the cloudiness to stop. Once the extra debris had been filtered out, things went back to normal. Not sure on the wrasse.

Did you rinse your sand before putting it in? If so, then it could be detritus that should probably get filtered out anyway. Either way, it could take several days to clear up depending on your water turnover. I moved a little zoa rock last night and mine went nuts and make a huge mess ( detritus). But it's cleared up now.

Mine finds a new spot once a week or so. I can always tell when that happens from across the room.

Diamond gobies always make a mess when added to the tank. If you decide to wait it out, you'll probably be glad you did. They tend to have great personalities and are fun to watch. Especially when they decide on a new landscaping design.

We got the Goby Thursday so I need to give it more time. I really enjoy watching the fish so I will wait it out like everyone is saying. Just frustrating because all of a sudden my wifes favorite fish (Wrasse) started to act weird so I was afraid something was happening to it from the cloudiness. Reading more about it, I guess it is stressed and is releasing a slimy substance to protect itself. On top of that my skimmer isn't working properly due to the sand being thrown around.

We didn't rinse our sand so I am guessing it may be awhile like some of you are saying.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

It'll definitely take a while for that detritus from un-rinsed sand to get filtered out. I'd run a filter sock and carbon, as well as skim wetter in order to more efficiently remove some of those floating particulates from the water column.

I also have a McCosker's flasher wrasse, and although I haven't seen his sleeping spot, I do believe they secrete a mucous cocoon to protect themselves when sleeping (as opposed to sleeping inside the sand bed).

I really like my diamond goby, so once all this sand storm and detritus is out of the way, you'll definitely enjoy watching him more!

Yep, that's a goby for you, mine started to move my sand all to one spot in the tank, and that on his first day!!

He built a mountain 4 inches high and then he moved the sand to another spot.
My kids call him bob the builder (don't know if you know that show) and he is the family's favorite fish (mine too)

He got to "normal" mode after a week or so, and he keeps my sand really clean

Give him time, you'll start to love him.

Starting to get more concerned about the Wrasse. It's been hiding under a rock and isn't coming out during feeding time. Normally it's out swimming all around the tank. Really hope it comes around.

Any further feedback would be appreciated.

Also love my Gobies. I have three in my 180. All sand sifters. A pair of Two lined railway sleepers and a yellow headed. I never ever get tired of watching them work. And my sand in the 180 is spotless. have had no need to vacuum for over a year

I am so glad I just came across this thread - I was going to post the same question about the cloudiness in my tank after adding my gobie tonight. I also lost one to jumping out of the tank so I now have the tank completely covered. But it was so fun to watch them work. So I'm glad to know the cloudiness will go away! MLTRAN - hope your wrasse made it. Has your tank cleared?
