new tank

I have started my waiting period with just dry sand and live rock. I am now getting some yellow, brownish spots in the sand. Is this normal? And should I run my lights during this time or not?

It is normal (if it is diatoms)and will pass in time. For cycling there is no need to run the lights, though it maybe a good idea closer to the end of the cycle to run the lights and all of your equipment to ensure you have heat under control.
