Not on all brands but sometimes you have to bump up your size of skimmer to get better parts, be it pump, cone, bubble plate...

Correct, I usually don't recommned gross oversizing although based on of the recommendations that you and others normally give, I would usuall go one up. Not saying that yours and many others recommendations are wrong, rather that it doesn't fit my mindset.

When I got started on RC, I followed the Tank of the Month articles constantly. I saw that many of the SPS tanks there had what most would call oversized skimmers. Most of the SPS tanks that I envied all had vastly oversized skimmers.

I actually love having the peace of mind that I can feed heavy and not worry about fouling the water. Just this morning before leaving work I added 6oz of Reef Nutrition food (mixture of Mysis Feast, Artic Pods, Roti Feast, Phyto Feast & Oyster Feast). I do this at least 3-4 times per week for the corals and the fish are fed pellets 4x per day from the Eheim. I have the peace of mind to know that can with room to spare.

That peace of mind is really what i am going for. I dont necessarily want super pristine water because i am not all about the SPS but i want to have a mixed reef (mostly non SPS) and be able to feed my fish and corals well to keep everyone fat and happy without worrying about it.

great points brought up by mojo and gcarroll (as usual).

I'm usually just cleaning inside of my skimmer cup. Most of the time it doesn't make it much into the cup. I've always wondered if this is a problem.

I guess the answer is yes and no. Just keep it as clean as possible.

BTW, I don't know if it's an optical illusion but the neck on the ATB elegance looks rather oversized. I wonder if that's why I'm having less in the cup and more in the column?

I don't think Coral can live very long under Sun light. It's too yellow. ...get yourself some LED's.
