Achilles Eye Pupil Fell Out
Have had an achilles tang in a 20L QT for 5 weeks now. 2 weeks into hypo salinity I noticed a cream colored spot of what I thought was a bacterial infection on one eye. Treated with Furan2. 3 Days later the spot is clearing, but I'm starting to think the iris is no longer in the eye itself. The eye remains, but the center is missing. The fish is eating fine but is hesitant to face me with the bad eye. Anybody have something like this happen? There was no swelling or injury that I could tell. Odds of success with introduction into the main tank down an eye? I'm bummed on getting the fish to eat well and through a good quarantine period just to have a maimed fish...

Sorry, the pupil can't "fall out." The pupil is an opening in the iris, and an opening simply can't fall out. The iris might close significantly (as in bright light, or under the influence of certain drugs), or there might be some sort of scar tissue obscuring the pupil.

Saw what looked like a small clear piece of bubble algae rolling around on the bottom of the tank and thought nothing of it a few days ago. Starting to wonder if this was the eye itself.

It will take some getting used to on his part but there's no reason he can't live a perfectly normal life with 1 eye missing. Assuming the infection hasn't spread.

Looks like his eye is gone. I don't see any cornea or lense. I don;t think fish have pupils at least not like ours in the way they contract with light.

Fish have pupils.
"Iris and Pupil The iris and the pupil are the optical components which serve to control the amount of light entering the eye. As the amount of light in the aquatic environment is restricted, most fish species show relatively little change in pupil size in order to maximise the amount of light entering the eye. However - some shallow water species are able to control the amount of light entering the eye, not through pupillary dilation/contraction, but through the use of coloured lenses and cornea's. (See Adaptation section below for more detail)" From here. As Anemone said, the pupil cannot fall out (nor roll around on the bottom), it's not a separate part of the eye from the rest of the eye.

looks to me like his eye is gone
bad news is his eye is gone good news is I've seen a LOT of fish live long lives with 1 eye I would leave him in QT for another week or 2 and make sure he continues to eat and that eye doesn't get worse. if those 2 things are met then I would say he is safe to go in DT and call him Bandit or 1 eye Jack or pirate dude! will he be disadvantaged, yes, will he adapt and overcome, sure, that is if he remains otherwise healthy he will just always be a unique fish and he will have to learn to adapt to his loss of that eye. best of luck with him, here's to hoping he makes it

The main problem is he basically has a hole in the side of his face...meaning he's very susceptible to infections and whatnot. I'd pay extra attention to him while he's still in quarantine.

Any suggestions on continuing the Furan2 treatment or a different antibiotic?

He is definitely a cyclops now for life. Most likely an infection.

I had the same thing happen to a flame angel whilst in QT.
In my situation, whilst undergoing meds, it seemed as if a worm "popped" out of his eye. He ended up losing the & died - i assume from infection(?) |
