Is majano a general name for an unidentified anemone?

Everytime I see someone post a pic of an unidentified hitchhiker, especially a small anemone, they get hammered with "it's majano" and "use joe's juice, kalk paste, etc" and inevitably "kill, kill, kill". I posted a picture a few months ago of my tulip anemone and alot of people said it was majano. It's NOT majano...it's a tulip anemone. It has divided a few times and stays on one rock. No issues.

Now I do have several small brown anemones that ARE a majano and ARE a pest and WILL get out of hand if not kept under control.

Anway, is majano a general term for an unidentified anemone? Even a Google search pulls up many different kinds of small anemones.

It is quite often over-used. Other general terms for small nems are rock, tulip and flower anemone. To get an exact species name on some of these would require quite a bit of knowledge and experience in the field.

Mojanos' are the dandilion of the anemone world. If you run the tank low enough in nutrients, you may slow their spread, but eventually, they will spread.

Anemonia manjano (notice it has 2 Ns) is an actual species name. For some reason though, hobbyists label just about every pest anemone in the hobby either Aiptasia if it's brown of clear, or "majano" (or various other spellings) if it's more colorful or has clubbed tips as if these names had any real meaning.

Both have roots in actual names of anemones, but as hobbyists use them you could just consider them common terms for pest anemones in general.

Haha, just because one is colorful does not mean it's less invasive, tulip anemones are one of the most invasive...

They ARE a pest.

Please no offense but this type of advice is silly. If a tulip anemone is one of the most invasive then it's no wonder people get out of this hobby. People turn to RC for advice and then see that the little green anemone that came in on a rock is going to take over their tank and then take over the planet then they panic and get out. In the past six months it would taken me the about the time to remove the small rock that they are on to get rid of this "pest" called a tulip anemone. I'll stick to my guns...it's not a pest. When it becomes as invasive as these freaking vermitid snails I will personally make a post that I was wrong!

Hello Greenbean,

thanks for putting it "right".
Most of the people unfortunately name it majano instead of the correct manjano.
Completely correct by the way is the expression
Anemonia cf. manjano

regards

Markus
