new frogspawn lps questions

so im trying my hand with an lps. i purchased a 5 head and brought it home its been two days and one of the heads dosent look so well now. i placed it high and over 6 inches from anything else. under good t-5 lighting. i have turbulent water flow with 4 controlable pumps running in cycles. how long should it take for it to open? it apears partly open. i read it likes high flow? i keep mostly softies and have always been sucessful with them.

In my experience (which isn't much) frogspawn actually like to be placed lower in the tank. I have mine on the bottom, with indirect moderate flow. You don't want it's polyps moving chaotically. Just a gentle back and forth. Also, it may need to just adjust to your system. When I moved my down to the bottom it was closed up and didn't look great for several days. Then he perked right back up. LPS don't need nearly the light that SPS need so no need to have him up near the surface.

good luck

What's your alkalinity and calcium and magnesium levels? my sig line has good readings for them.

Mine did very well for the first week or so. Then started to get worse and worse. 2 heads popped out. One head was pretty much always happy and still is. So now I have the two popped heads in a glass in the tank, hoping one day they will grow rock again. I changed the lighting schedule from 13 hours to 6 and it is overall much happier. I put it right about mid-way in the tank. Mine seems to like moderate to low flow.

they need gental flow, just enough to make them sway a little bit in the current

Exactly as others have stated. Turbulent flow isnt very nice for LPS. They just need a gentle indirect flow. Also, alot of LPS like low to moderate light. Placing them high in the tank upsets them.

Sk8r is right about alk and mag. But its generally a good rule to check that.

Also whenever you get a new coral, its best to place it on the bottom to acclimate it to light and water conditions. So put it in the sand and give it some time.

But most LPS dont need much light at all IME or flow for that matter

FWIW, my frogspawn do not like the brightest lit parts of my tank, and can be killed in the very brightest light I have. They expand more and more poorly in brighter light until one can barely see any polyps.

That said, my lights may be a lot brighter than yours, using 250 w DE 10,000k metal halides.

wow. ok i only have 2, 4 bulb t-5's tho. i have 2 256W setups. with 2 white and 2 actinic. see attached pic. i was under the impression that was low lighting. aprox 4W per gallon. i do have alot of flow tho. i will turn down my pumps a bit. the heads do seam to be getting tossed around a bit. do you think its too bright tho? if the heads seperate i should save them and they may grow new base's?

Up high...thats too much light with LPS. Thats enough light for SPS. Just put it on the sandbed for awhile...at least a week.
