M Bean or my Herbie

Okay so i have gone nuts searching these 2 over and over again only to get confused even more.

From what I understand, Herbie has 3 drains, 1 return, Bean has 2 drains, 1 return ?

Than the Herbie is the quietest one of the two and the safest of the two?

Now I have a 40B and don't think I need 3 drains AT ALL.

But i do need quiet because this tank is in my bedroom.

Please someone help clarify.

Herbie is two drains, one a full siphon and a backup, Bean is 3 drains, one a full siphon, one a backup and the last an emergency. Herbie is fine for a low flow siphon but the Bean is safer and better suited for a lot more flow.

Thanks for that!

Is the backup in the herbie the upside down pvc pipe? I thought the backup was already the emergency one? SObasically the bean has 2 emergency ones so to say?

Do you think about a 700gph overflow box with a 500gph return pump that is low flow for a Herbie?

There are a few different ways to run the Herbie, go to the Herbie thread so see them. The Bean is safer because of the redundancy.

The pump should be fine, after head loss you won't be pumping 500 gph and if it has a 1" drain, a full siphon could handle about 1000 gph.

It's pretty simple. If you have the room in your overflow, do BeanAnimal. It's safer.
If you are limited on space, do Herbie.
Both are silent, both utilize a full siphon as the main drain and both offer an emergency drain. Like you said, Beans effectively offers TWO backups.

is the RIo 1700 a good pump/quiet one?

I searched that someone returned theirs bc it was too much flow for their 90 gal tank, is this too much for mine?

I think I might just go with the Herbie because i don't think need 2 extra emergency drains. Plus extra $ for parts and plumbing when i doubt that 2 drains would fail

actually Im reading that lots of RIos in the 2004-2009 range failed within a few weeks. Thinking twice about it now. I just don't want to spend $80 on a pump.
