Inherited a Yellow Tang

My friend is moving and had to break his tank down for a few months. Being a good friend I took his yellow tang for him, problem is my tank is 45 gallon (3 feet long). This tang is so lively and happy in my tank so at the moment I do not feel all that guilty. I don't want the tang police to come take me away remember this is just temporary!

The tang is only 3 inches big, should this be fine for 2-4 months? I have no idea how fast these fish grow or if it is already to big for my tank. Just want to know if I should tell him to find another tank to keep him in for a while. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about it to much as long as its eating. Its only a few months right? I've seen Tangs kept at LFS in smaller tanks.

Just dont answer the door for this lady.

Because you'll see one of these.

LOL I knew the Tang police was real!! At the most it will be 4 months. I just don't want the thing to suffer at all. It eats like a pig and eats nori as soon as it goes in as well. Loves to swim around and all my fish follow him around.

I had a yellow tang in a 120g...4x2x2. Plenty of space right? And from my experience they don't swim that much. He was more of a grazer....moving from area to area as he saw fit. Not continuous swimming. He didn't need that much space.

Some tangs need the swimming space to stretch out and get moving...I don't think yellow tangs are one of them. Sure, we'd love to have 1,000 gallon tanks to provide this, but in reality any tank in our home will be a far cry from what the ocean.

I agree. I have a PBT in my 50 gallon and he is super happy, eats well, ich free, and super freindly. Of course mine is pretty small at 2.5". I agree that if you have a 7" tang it cant go into a tank this size but if you raise them from juvinille they may not get super big becasue of thier enviorment. They adapt. not in all case but in some. The tang should be fine as long as he isnt showing signs of stress. Like people fish are all different and respond differently. I have had my PBT for 6 months now with no issue. I am going to be getting a larger tank around 200 gallons so that doesnt hurt but im not a big fan of everyone saying you can keep a tang in a tank smaller than 100 gallons. simply not true in some cases. My old man had a 60 gallon DT and lived for nearly 10 years

Ok glad to hear some success stories. I figured it would be fine, just from reading some posts people get flamed for having any tang in less then a 75. It's temporary, so this little guy will be fine until he gets back into his normal 125 gallon home in a few months.

Keep it.

Your tank.

Your fish.
