Question Mandarin Goby

If my goby is picking at the live rock and sand bottom (the special way that they do), he is most certainly finding pods right??

Not necessarily... But that means he is looking. We see ours pick up sand and other things then immediately spit them back out. What size thank do you have?

If you can actually see pods in your tank, then likely, yes.

Its a 26 gal that's been up for awhile. When I set it up I added live rock from another tank that was very established. I also seeded it with some pods with more on the way.

Would they eat mysis? I've seen some do that.

From what I've read, you have to train them to eat prepared foods and in a 26 gallon tank, that will be important for its survival. And at the end of the day, some will eat prepared and some won't.

I am in the process of replacing my 75 with a 170. I'm thinking about moving him to that tank. Since I will be using the water and live rock from the 75 to the 170, I'm sure there is an abundance of pods. The 75 also has a fuge that I've seeded.

Your mandarin will almost certainly stave to death in a 26 gallon tank. It is not large enough to sustain the dragonettes pod requirements. Most recommend well over 100 gallon tank, with lots of live rock.

I do add pods. What is a decent amount to add without causing an ammonia spike?

I would try and get him on frozen foods. I just picked up a fat male from work and he's well trained on frozen foods but he went nuts over the pods I put into the tank for him. They vary and some will never eat frozen foods but you can try and enrich it for them.

you will have to add pods everyday, they can eat 1000 of them a day why is it not in your 75 gal to start with?

Frozen mysis and however many pods you think can get in a 26 or 29 gallon tank will probably still lead to starvation. Maintaining copepod cultures for feeding may also be hard to get you what you need but it will help your chances. If you have only the mandy in your tank and can add live mysis you may have a chance. Keep an eye on his belly to see how you are doing. Do you have it in your heart to find a new home for him if you see him get skinny?

+1 put him in the 75 - you can still do the mandarin diner but he has a better chance of not starving in the 75, some of them like Nutramar Ova too if you can find it
