Petco 20% tax

I got my 40 Gallon breeder for 48.05. $40 + 8.05 in tax. I asked the lady and was told I paid tax on the 114.99 price and was than given 74.99 off. That's bs if you ask me, but still s good deal. I'm going to use it to mix salt water for water changes and as a qt tank. It fits nicely in my stand next to my 75 gallon sump.

I think if you get into the details of it, the discount is not a sale price but an instant rebate of sorts so the tax is based in the true price. Petco only collects the tax and it cannot use that as revenue.

Basically
If it is on sale the taxes are based on the sale price
If it is a discount, taxes are always added to the regular price THEN the discount is applied

I understand, but if I was doing it I would not give extra money to the state. They are collecting tax on money that never actually changed hands.

believe it or not most large retail stores get back around 1% of the total amount of taxes collected on the state's behalf that the store is in. now 1% does not sound like much but when a single walmart in a metro area does between 3-5 million a month in sales and collects 7% of that here in the state of florida then that 1% that they get back begins to sound like a lot. walmart does the same thing regarding collecting the tax on the original price versus the price after a coupon. go buy 1 item with a coupon and look at how much sales tax you pay.

Not a my PetCo.

I bought a 40b on 6/28/12 ... still have the receipt.
Regular price = $114.99
P.A.L.S. discount = -$74.99
Taxable total = $40.00
TX Tax 8.25% = $3.30
Total due $43.30

Tax on $114.99 would have been $9.49.

There is a another big thread about this, California charges the extra tax and some states do not. What ever the law is is what they charge I believe it is the same with cars but sure on that one.

It sure is BS.....but the Petco is only following state tax laws.

When I used to smoke and get the BOGO free packs, I still had to pay sales tax on the free pack. They think long and hard to be sure they get as much tax money as they possibly can

I'm sure glad my state puts that box on my state tax form so I can pay them for all craigslist and online purchases. It's so easy if you just keep track of it all. I love paying taxes, especially when I see all the hard working state employees.

They way I see it is I would never pay 114.99. It's like if you are trying to sell your house for 250,000 and you agree to pay your realtor 6%. Do you still pay them 15,000 if you end up selling for 225,000? No you pay based on the money that changes hands.
I know it's the law I'm not arguing that. I just think its wrong. Petco chooses to make it a rebate and not a sale price. Most likely because they get to keep s portion of the tax

All of the Cell hone companies do the same thing for instance if you bought an Iphone for 249 plus the 2 year plan you are paying taxes on 649.00. This is what an Iphone would cost if you bought it without the plan.

You should upgrade phones at Walmart. I did it for my chick phone and only paid tax on the money that exchanged hands. My iPhone was about 249 at the iPhone store. $199 plus tax on $649 or whatever the full price is. At walmart the total price for the exact same phone was $215. I asked why and they said they charge tax on $199 and not $649. I'm doing all my upgrades at Walmart from now on!

I think the line of thinking behind this is to prevent tax fraud.

For instance, if I was a Lawyer and you were a Carpenter and we exchanged services, I helped you with your divorce and you made me new cabinets, taxes are owed on the market price of the services provided.

Granted no one really does this

I think mcdonaldjt is talking about ALL cellphones stores. I bought my iPhone from apple because no one else had em at the time. But once they weren't so popular, my chick wanted one and we got hers at Walmart. And from now on I will ONLY get my phones at Walmart. F paying tax on full retail price.
