Mp40 question.
Hi all,
I am currently running 2 mp40's in my 120 4" reef. I run them anti sync on lagoon mode. Keeping all lps and softies. I am finding that even on the lowest setting, a lot of my corals are getting too much flow. My neon candy canes have looked horrible since they have been in the new tank and I can't seem to find a good place for them that gets no flow. Would there be a better choice such as 2 Mp 10's instead? Any input would be great. I can post up a pic if that would help to give a better idea. Thanks! Josh |

Even at the lowest setting (1,000gph) it would still be too low to cause a too much flow issue in that size tank. I dont think flow is your issue but I'll be more than willing to trade an mp10 for your 40

I have my Tube Nem directly BELOW the MP40, close to the glass. There is almost ZERO flow there. The MP40 is about half way up the side of a 31" deep tank. In the same area I have a leather coral and several mushrooms. All three have really come to life in the low flow are of the tank.
I have found that in my 150G Tall (48x30x24)...the middle of the tank, so 24" away from either MP40 (I have two), gets absolutely rocked. I have hammer, torch and Zoas in the high flow...they love it. The closer I move the softies to either side, the slower the flow, the better polyp extension I seem to get. Of course...it could all be related to the lighting reach on those parts of the tank too. In addition, I have an APEX the WXM module to completely adjust the intensity and mode cycles for the MP40s on the tank. I switch modes and sync to anti-sync every hour or so. I have found this works for my setup. If your 120 is shallow....you may have to downsize to a MP10. Cheers, Matt.

Thanks for the input Matt. My tank is 48x24x24 and my tube nem is in the same spot as yours is, but the mp40 that is on the opposite side still gets it. I had my trumpet corals off to the side before and they were still getting too much flow. I think I will try moving a few things around and see if that helps but it really seems that 2 mp40's on this reef may be too much for the corals I keep.

I just dont see how 2 mp40s would be too much flow. I had the exact same size 120g tank and I actually ended up buying a third mp40 because I didn't thing my tank had enough flow. I had softies, LPS and SPS all of them seemed to like the extra flow. Have you tried moving the corals to other locations?

I'm going to try moving a few things around today when I do my water change and see if that helps.
