can you use play sand for a fish only tank?

this is gonna be my first real attempt at saltwater. ive had freshwater tanks for most of my life, and im curious could you use play sand for a fish only tank?

You can, but you have much better sand options with sands for aquarium use; they look waaaaay better.

not sure about playsand, but I do remember seeing a video of someone recommending using pool filter sand.

I believe the problem with playground sand is they are high in silica. I seem to remember it from another thread.

Depends on what the playsand is made of. If it's aragonite based it can be used, to test if it's aragonite based take a small amount and put it in some vinegar, if it bubbles its aragonite based.

I have play sand in my brackish/salt tank (usually keep it around 1.015-1.020) I don't have problems with algae. But I do not like the look enough to actually use it in a full salt tank.

I used playsand in a cichlid tank once...hated it. took FOREVER to clean and had alot of clay in it

if you're not going to use aquarium sand, I hear pool filter sand is ok for 1-2 inches. just make sure to rinse the hell out of it.
