Question regarding tank stand.

Hey everyone. Well I'm in the mist of doing a build and right now I am debating on what to do with my stand. I bought this stand from Petsmart awhile ago and I modified it so it will be good for my tank. But now after looking at it I am not sure if I want the color it has. It doesn't really match my wooden furniture in my bedroom. So I am debating on sanding it down and restaining it something to match. My only question is, does anyone know if the stand is capable of getting restained? I just don't know if Petsmart puts such a high amount of stain on there stands were I wouldn't get the color out without sanding it down to a huge degree.

You could always reskin it with 1/4" veneer plywood.

Is the stand real wood or is it one of those fiberboard stands that Petco sells? If it's fiberboard I wouldn't want to try to sand and re-stain it.

If it's real wood, what color is the stand now and what color do you want to make it?

I don't believe Petsmart even sells real wood stands do they? I would say reskinning if possible.

Could you just paint it instead?? Krylon spray paint works great for even slippery sufaces without running. Just a thought...

A picture would solve the mystery of being able to re-stain or not.

From what i know about those stands the chain stores sell they are just laminated fiberboard. IMO it sounds like a lot of work to try to modify a stand like that.

I've seen pine stands come out of these stores, but because pine is so soft, and it's already been stained once so the grain has been sealed, trying to alter the color with another coat of stain can be tough.

I don't think that is particle board, looks like a nice high end stand. How about a pic or 2 of the inside of the doors and stand itself. But as of right now, with a lot of patience, I think it could be done.

I can get a pic of the doors and inside the stand, I will have to post it a little later since I have class soon. The inside of the stand is were I modified it. I was told by some members on here that I should add support inside the stand because they didn't think it would hold my 37g tall tank. When I show pics of inside you will see the supports I added.

I can post a pic of a little of the inside that I had from before. I would also like a 2nd opinion from you guys if you think that information about the tank stand needing to be supported more to hold my tank because the supports took up alot of room that coulda been used. Also this stand is bigger in width wise then my tank (stand is 33", tank is 20 1/4")

it looks like solid wood and plywood so you should be able to sand the stain off with a orbital sander and 100 grit sandpaper along with some hand sanding then sand with 150 grit before you restain it

I agree...just be prepared to apply more than one coat if it comes out splotchy. Is that a word "splotchy"?

Anyway...it's a doable project, my sister refinished her Oceanic stand which looked very similar to this, it just took multiple coats, but turned out very very nice.

Yea only thing I am trying to think is how to sand the doors since it has that pattern.

Also anyone have any idea with the whole adding support thing? Was it needed to do you think or no?

It's somewhat difficult to see the supports in the pictures. Is it a cross-beam toward the top?

No there was no cross beam. There was actaully a drawer at the top above the doors.

I know I actually really like that stand! Only thing I would do is paint it black Looks like you've got a lot of work ahead of you. Think of how good your going to be at sanding and painting when your done though.

Any of you guys know if I actaully would of needed to add the extra bracing in it? Only reason I ask this is because if I didn't and can remove it it will allow more height room. But if not, no biggie

I am not sure I can tell what exactly you modified.

I actaully put 3/4" plywood on the sides of the inside and pieces going across the top that sit on the side pieces for support. Was that needed?
