DSB or SSB
hello every one. im returning to the hobby after a 7 year absence to find that every thing has changed. i have a 65 gallon tall (36*18*24) with a marine land sump, little one return pump, tanks drilled with 2 1.5 inch overflows and im going to be running a fluval 305 filter. im wondering if any one can offer an sugestions on deep sand bed versus shallow sand bed. plenum filter or not, and what type of lights. dont currently have any sand or rock thats up in the air as to what type im going to use. again its been 7 years and every thing has changed. i look forward to hearing for you all and listening to your sugestions.
thanks |

o i should also not. my current will be created by 2 3/4 inch squids hooked up in parallel to my return pump. so that i can have 4 separate returns in my tank at different locations and get the desired current

both methods work!!! naturally someone will chime in about how disastrous a DSB is but I think that people blame or use the wrong corollary when reaching these momentous epithenies.... personally I have a SSB, not because DSB are evil or even very problematic, I just feel SSB are easier in the longer run, but even thats a "Weak" endorsement.... if you are starting out, I'd advise a SSB with good flow above it...again, thats not written in stone, just one mans opinion

thanks for your sugestions as well. as i am just starting out i havent truly decided as to what i want to do. i do no i want to use sugar sand as aposed to crushed coral or even gravel. i like the look and texture. as well as its alot better for the critters to live in.

if you have a fuge go for the remote dsb.i have a dsb in my show tank and the only drawback is the 5 inches of glass the sand covers looks like $hit if you cover that i have no down sides only plusses.i also think most of the sand they sell is either to tiny of a grain or two big.mix two diff grains to get a propper sand bed.go with black sand im going to do that next time cause it will look better for that 5 inches of glass the dsb covers no rust color or staining.

i unfortunately dont have a fuge. im contemplating one but need to justify in my mind the use of it. any thing in it i can put in the tank. i do like the idea of black sand. and i understand were your coming from with gran size. its hard to find what you want unless you order off the net, but then they hit you with super shipping charges. but non the less i appreciate the advice. i do have a sump i was thinking about putting a DSB in there but its just a small one and dont want to over flow it. so i duno it it will work.

I'd go with the look that appeals to you most aesthecially. I started off with a SSB in the 225, but eventually preferred the deeper SB look. I went with 0.5-1.0mm grain size to accomodate my sand-sifting goby. Also, like most people on RC, I definitely would recommend a sump/refugium. There are some great threads on here on why.

i do wonder weather or not i could put a fuge in my sump. i may be able to depending on how deep of a sand bed i put. what type of critters are good in the fuge.

iv removed some of the sand from my sump so i think i can get away with putting a fuge on it. i just need to separate the chamber so my return pump doesn't take any thing up with it. any suggestions on lighting for the fuge.
